Sustainable Design

Lancaster Family YMCA-Pursuing a LEED certification level of silverAs the need for more environmentally conscious design has emerged in the construction industry, the need for architects to respond to the vision of our client's needs has increased. Sustainable design is not only a responsive process intended to mitigate the impact of buildings and their corresponding sites on the environment, but sustainable design also meets the needs of the occupants of buildings and spaces. Utilizing concepts such as natural daylighting, monitoring indoor air quality, and providing interior lighting and thermal controls enhances the experience of building occupants.

Cornerstone Design-Architects is responding to this design initiative. Staff members are currently becoming certified in the green building rating system known as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), which is developed by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). The LEED rating system is a guideline of sustainable principles intended to minimize the impact of buildings and sites upon the environment and promote buildings that are healthy and exciting to occupy.

Our mission is to responsively and creatively design facilities of significance. If our client's vision includes incorporating sustainable design principles, Cornerstone Design-Architects will lead the design team in finding solutions that respond to our client's vision and intentions for their facility.

What is LEED®? LEED - Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design - is a rating system administered by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) that provides a national standard for what constitutes a green building. It offers a set of scientifically based performance criteria and a point system for LEED project certification. This brochure discusses light control strategies for LEED for New Construction and Major Renovations (LEED-NC), and LEED for Commercial Interiors (LEED-CI).
